Iya Jones
Jackson State Community College’s female athlete of the year, Iya Jones, played basketball for the school. Her freshman season she earned All-TCCAA honors when she averaged 14.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists while leading JSCC to its most regular-season wins in more than 30 years. This season she averaged 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. A graduate of Liberty Tech High School, she has a 2.9 GPA and has basketball scholarship offers from numerous four-year colleges. She plans to study sociology and social work.
Travis Reaves
Jackson State Community College’s male athlete of the year, Travis Reaves, played baseball for the school. Last season he had a .305 batting average with 35 RBI, 76 hits, seven doubles, three home runs, 55 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. He made the All-TCCAA and All-NJCAA academic teams and has a 3.4 GPA. He has signed with Eastern Illinois University to continue his athletic and academic career.
Lane College
Candace Gains
Lane College’s female athlete of the year, Candace Gains, played basketball two years for the Lady Dragons and excelled academically. She was team captain and made the SIAC All-Academic team. She led the Lady Dragons in community service hours and graduates in May with a 3.8 GPA in business administration.
Chris O'Neal
Lane College’s male athlete of the year, Chris O’Neal, was a stellar baseball player for the Dragons. His career statistics include a .361 batting average with 125 RBI, 31 home runs, 29 doubles and 119 runs scored. He was a 2020 Black College Nines second team All-American and made the SIAC All-Academic team. A business major from Barnesville, Ga., he graduated in December.
Union University
Meghan Delaney
Union University’s female athlete of the year, Meghan Delaney, plays volleyball for the Lady Bulldogs. Her career statistics include 245 sets, 813 kills, a .942 hit percentage, 64 aces, 645 digs and 937.5 points. She is a CoSIDA Academic All-American and on the Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team. As a player she is a GSC first team All-Conference pick. In 2019 she finished third in NCAA Division II with 520 kills. She was named to the honorable mention GSC All-Decade Team last year. She will graduate in May and plans to use her fifth year of eligibility to play in the fall and begin her Master’s degree in nursing.
Josh Bozoian
Union University’s male athlete of the year, Josh Bozoian, played baseball for the Bulldogs. This season he is a team leader in home runs and slugging percentage. Last season he led the Bulldogs in homers, RBI and slugging percentage. His career stats include 15 home runs, 16 doubles and 62 RBI in 105 games. He is consistently on the Gulf South Conference academic honor roll and Union’s Dean’s List.
